The NYSHEX Freight Indices (NYFI) track the spot and short-term container shipping market across major global trade lanes, including trans-Pacific, trans-Atlantic, and Asia-North Europe. NYFI is built exclusively from rates tied to cargo that has actually shipped, gated in or loaded and confirmed with a milestone date, rather than quotes, booked rates, or estimates. Data is sourced from a balanced panel of carriers and non-vessel common carriers (NVOs) and weighted by transaction volume, ensuring the index reflects where cargo is actually moving rather than where it's merely being quoted. NYFI is governed by an independent board with equal representation from carriers, NVOs, and beneficial cargo owerns, and is designed to meet the IOSCO Principles for Financial Benchmarks and BMR requirements. NYFI rates are calculated as volume-weighted averages, so lanes and shipments with higher cargo volume carry more weight in the index, keeping the benchmark representative of where the market is actually transacting. Rates are collected at the base-port-pair level for 20-foot and 40-foot dry containers, covering the base ocean freight rate and mandatory surcharges (bunker fuel, currency adjustment, peak season, and similar), while landside and port charges are excluded. Statistical outliers, rates more than two standard deviations from a four-week rolling average, are removed before calculation. Indices are published every Friday at 10 am EST.
