Canadian Freight Index Results Mixed in May

TransCore Link Logistics’ Canadian Freight Index volume rose 10 percent in May compared with the previous month, following weak results in April, but dropped 16 percent year-over-year.

May’s load volume for cross-border postings averaged 71 percent of total volume. Monthly cross-border loads destined for provinces within Canada were down 16 percent versus May 2012, although cross-border loads from Canada to the U.S. were basically flat year-over-year. Meanwhile, intra-Canada load volume, which represented 24 percent of total volume for May, decreased 10 percent from the same month last year.

The equipment postings for May were relatively steady compared with April. Month-to-month levels inched up 2 percent and postings increased 3 percent. The equipment-to-load ratio improved to 2.35 in May from 2.18 in April.
