Volvo to Sell Dimethyl Ether-Powered Trucks in U.S.

Volvo Trucks has plans to sell dimethyl ether-powered heavy-duty commercial vehicles in North America.

As the latest step in its “Blue Power” alternative fuel strategy, Volvo revealed ongoing U.S. customer field testing of trucks powered by DME and demonstrated the technology at the California State Capitol. The company plans to begin limited production of the DME-powered vehicles in 2015.

Volvo’s DME technology will be available in a Volvo D13 heavy-duty engine, and the I-Shift automated manual transmission will be standard on DME-powered trucks.

DME-powered vehicles will join a lineup that already includes compress natural gas-powered Volvo VNM and VNL model day cabs. The company will also introduce its own liquefied natural gas engine in VNL day cabs and sleepers next year.
