Canadian Shipping Costs Climb 3 Percent

Canadian shippers saw overall ground transportation costs rise 3 percent month-to-month in July, according to the latest Canadian General Freight Index.

Base rates, excluding fuel surcharges, increased 3.2 percent from June. The average Canadian fuel surcharge dropped slightly to 13.13 percent of base rates.

“We reached a floor in transportation costs for Canadian shippers in April,” said Doug Payne, president of Nulogx, which sponsors the freight cost index.

“Since then we have seen three consecutive months of increases, led primarily by activity in both the domestic and transborder truckload sectors,” said Payne.
