SP SIGNS PACT TO BUY

FIBER OPTICS FIRMSouthern Pacific Transportation Co. has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Digital Signal Inc., a Michigan-based fiber optics company.

Digital Signal provides private-line service between 88 cities on its network, which services long-distance carriers. The SP's Southern Pacific Telecommunications Co. operates a fiber optics communications system between Houston and San Francisco and arranges for the installation of systems for customers anywhere along the railroad's 15,000-mile track system.

No sales price or other details were released Wednesday. The parties said the deal should be completed within 60 days.

FORD SHIPPER AWARD

PALO ALTO, Calif. - CF Motor Freight was honored with Ford Motor Co.'s first transportation award for "exemplary performance" as one of Ford's top freight carriers.

"CF Motor Freight has excelled in all areas: on-time transit performance, damage-free delivery and overall service," said Richard Haupt, Ford's director of transportation and traffic.

The automaker established the award last year to recognize carriers who meet or exceed the shipper's standards for delivery of goods.

CF Motor Freight, the long-haul trucking subsidiary of Consolidated

Freightways Inc., was the only less-than-truckload carrier among the five transportation carriers chosen to receive the award in its first year.

P-I-E NAMED CARRIER

FOR OLYMPIC FESTIVAL

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - P-I-E Nationwide Inc. was selected as the exclusive motor carrier for U.S. Olympic Festival '90 by the Twin Cities Festival Organizing Committee.

P-I-E Nationwide will haul athletic equipment and supplies for the festival, the largest multi-sport event for U.S. Olympic hopefuls in 1990.

The TCFOC is the local organizing committee for the festival, to be held in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area July 6-15.
