Shippers are coming under increased pressure from carriers to finally digitize one of the basic props of transportation: the bill of lading (BOL). Efforts to digitize the basic transportation contract that must accompany each shipment, whether on an ocean vessel or tractor-trailer, aren’t necessarily new, but they’re gaining ground in an era of e-commerce and tight capacity.

This infographic provides an overview of the value less-than-truckload trucking companies see in digitizing the BOL, including the ability to plan linehaul runs in advance, better utilizing existing capacity, and reveals some problems that can and do arise with paper bills. Digitizing BOLs to gain efficiency is one way businesses can become “shippers of choice.”
