House Votes To Extend Highway Programs to October

The House voted, 421 to four, to extend federal surface transportation spending programs at current levels through the 2011 budget year that ends in September.

The extension of authority to spend out of the Highway Trust Fund covers highway, transit and related programs that were set to expire March 4 after a series of earlier short-term funding extensions and program authorizations.

The House vote is expected to be followed by similar action in the Senate, and is designed to give states and the nation's construction industry some certainty about funding flow as they head into the spring and summer construction seasons.

The measure was sponsored by Rep. John Mica, R-Fla., who chairs the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. He said it will give his panel time to craft a replacement long-term transportation bill.
