Pacer Taps Gardner to Head International Unit

North American intermodal and global logistics firm Pacer International picked industry veteran Daniel L. Gardner as CEO of its international business unit that includes forwarding, customs brokerage and a non-vessel-operating common carrier.

Pacer said that unit's president, Alan Baer, will stay on hand through March 31 during the transition.

Gardner will report to Michael Killea, executive vice president for International Logistics, with a mandate to "aggressively expand Pacer's global transportation footprint and capabilities, and to deliver seamless integration with its portfolio of domestic intermodal, highway and transload services," the company said.

Chairman and CEO Daniel Avramovich said the international business group "is a key area of focus for Pacer in 2011, as we intend to expand our NVOCC and forwarding operations around the world to meet the current and future needs of our customers."

That follows two years in which Pacer has been retooling its business plan, finances, intermodal partnerships and executive staff. Pacer this week also revamped its revolving credit facility with lender, cutting costs and winning covenants that give it more flexibility to make capital investments or acquisitions.

Gardner's operations will include Ocean World Lines, Pacer's NVOCC, and RF International, its freight forwarding and customs house brokerage unit.

His experience includes executive positions with ATC Logistics & Electronics, DHL Global Forwarding, Exel Global Logistics, GeoLogistics Americas and Fritz Companies.
