Norfolk Southern Allocates $2 Billion for Rail Improvements

Class I railroad Norfolk Southern plans to spend $2 billion in 2013 for capital improvements to its rail transportation network.

The investment includes $831 million for roadway improvements, including the maintenance and replacement of rail, crossties, ballast and bridges; $420 million for new or upgraded equipment, including locomotives, coal cars, multilevel freight cars and intermodal containers and chassis; $229 million for the continued implementation of positive train control; $203 million for facilities and terminals investments; $84 million in infrastructure improvements to increase main line capacity; and $57 million for new and upgraded technology systems and computers.
