DP World to Lift Dubai Capacity by 5 Million TEUs

DP World will add 5 million TEUs of additional capacity to Jebel Ali port by 2014.

One million TEUs will come on stream when the extension of Terminal 2 is completed in the first half of 2013. A further 4 million TEUs will be available within two years when the new $850 million Terminal 3 is opened.

The expansion will take annual capacity to 19 million TEUs at the company’s flagship Dubai facility.

Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, DP World chairman, said the expansion would support the growth of Dubai and global trade. “Increasingly, the lines are seeking economies of scale with new generation mega-ships, and we stand ready to handle these giants of the sea, reinforcing Dubai’s role as the center of trade in the region,” he said.

The new T3 will boast quay length of 1,860 meters, a 70-hectare storage yard, and a draft of 17 meters suitable for the next generation 18,000-TEU mega-vessels that will begin to enter service next year.
