Throughput Grows 6 Percent at Port of Mumbai

India’s Port of Mumbai boosted throughput by 6 percent year-over-year in the first 11 months of fiscal 2012-13, the port authority said in a statement Monday.

Total tonnage from April 2012 to February 2013 reached 53 million tons, up from 50.2 million tons in the same period in fiscal 2011-12. Inbound volume was 36.7 million tons, increasing from 35 million tons. Outgoing volume was 16.3 million tons, up from 15.6 million tons.

Container traffic for the 11-month period was 53,667 20-foot-equivalent units, increasing slightly from 53,526 TEUs, with imports accounting for 43,554 TEUs.

Tonnage in February fell to 4.5 million tons from 5 million tons for the same month in 2012.

Mumbai port handled 56 million tons of cargo in fiscal 2011-12, which ended March 31, 2012, up 3 percent from 54.5 million tons the previous year. Box throughput for 2011-12 decreased 20 percent year-over-year to 57,760 TEUs.
