PERU'S GDP GREW 6 PERCENT IN AUGUST

Peru's gross domestic product grew 6 percent in August, compared with 5.8 percent in July, the national statistics institute said.

Growth from January-August this year reached 8.4 percent.Although the construction sector boomed, rising 27.9 percent in the first eight months of the year, other sectors slowed down compared with 1994.

In January-August, mining grew by only 2 percent, compared with 7.8 percent for the whole of 1994. Manufacturing rose 4.2 percent in the first eight months of 1995, compared with 17.8 percent for the whole of 1994.

The institute announced that, from 1996, it will use 1992 as a base year for macro statistics. Currently the government uses 1979.
