OCCIDENTAL CHEMICAL LAYS OUT CLEANUP PLAN

Occidental Chemical Corp. officials said they will build wells and trenches to help prevent runoff of contaminated water from the company's property in Kanawha County.

Dallas-based Occidental Chemical, which bought the 23.5-acre site in 1986, said it invited about 700 residents to attend a briefing Wednesday on the proposed multimillion-dollar cleanup. Only three people attended.Officials said they will use wells and trenches to bring the contaminated water to the surface for treatment. The cleanup could take decades, they said.

Occidental discovered low levels of chloromethanes in runoff from the plant in the late 1980s, officials said.
