MEXICO HONORS RULING

BY NAFTA PANEL ON STEEL

MEXICO CITY - The Mexican government has decided to let stand a North American Free Trade Agreement dispute-resolution panel decision favoring U.S. steelmakers.

Mexico's commerce agency - known by the acronym Secofi - on Friday published in the country's federal register a resolution honoring the Nafta panel's order.

There had been speculation that Mexico might appeal the Aug. 30 decision.

A split panel held that the Secofi office charged with resolving trade disputes was not legally empowered at the time it investigated steel plate imports from USX Corp. and Bethlehem Steel and ordered Secofi to end compensatory duties and repay the companies.
