THOUSANDS DIE IN INDIA'S WORST QUAKE IN 50 YEARS

At least 6,000 people were killed and thousands more injured when the region's deadliest earthquake in nearly half a century reduced hundreds of homes to rubble, burying people as they slept.

Officials said the quake, measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale, occurred at 3:56 a.m. local time Thursday (6:26 p.m. EDT Wednesday) and was centered about 45 miles northeast of Sholapur and about 240 miles southeast of Bombay.Officials said the death toll could easily rise.
