SEAGATE RESTRUCTURES, LAYS OFF 900 IN THAILAND

Computer disk-drive maker Seagate Technology (Thailand) said it has laid off 900 Thai workers as part of a global restructuring program.

There are more than a million Thais jobless because of the economic crisis. Seagate, a global computer giant, remains the largest single corporate employer in Thailand with 39,000 employees.''We are in the process of phasing out disk drive assembly'' in Thailand, said Seagate Technology Inc. Corporate Communications Director Supar Phokachaipat.

''Thailand will specialize in disk drive components,'' while disk drives will be assembled in Singapore, where 1,800 employees were laid off, she said.

The six plants in Thailand also produce sliders, head gimbals, motors, poles and printed-circuit boards, she said.

Seagate is laying off 10 percent of its 110,000-strong work force.
