Record 6 million boxes for Hamburg

The Port of Hamburg handled its six millionth container at the end of 203, a new annual record.

The record box was discharged at a ceremony at the Eurogate Container Terminal Hamburg attended by Gunnar Uldall, senator for Economic Affairs; Helfried Rietz, chief executive of Eurogate and vice president of the Port of Hamburg Business Association, and Dr. Jurgen Sorgenfrei, chairman of Port of Hamburg Marketing e. V. (HHM).

The import container, which came from China, was loaded in Hamburg's partner city of Shanghai on board the container ship Hyundai Confidence operated by Hyundai Merchant Marine. The record container contained 20 tons of electronic equipment, which will be delivered via Hamburg to recipients in the Frankfurt region after inspection. Together with the record container, approximately 2,200 containers were discharged and loaded in the docking time of only 24 hours.

Senator Uldall said, "With 14.8 percent growth in container handling, the Port of Hamburg once again takes the top position in 2003 among Northern European container ports, and continues to expand its strong market position.

"I am particularly encouraged that in this year, more than 100 million tons of seaborne cargo marked a tonnage record, but now the six millionth container has also marked a new container handling record," he said. "More handling also means more traffic. We will continue to adapt the port infrastructure to meet the requirements of faster deliveries and removals and in addition we will invest in the new construction of wharfage and in modernizing the port railway so we are equipped for further growth".

Since the last adaptation of the navigable Elbe River waters was completed in 1999, container handling in Hamburg has achieved growth of more than 10 percent each year. Sorgenfrei emphasized that container shipping with Asia underwent particularly strong growth in the past few years. More than 50 percent of the containers that are handled in Hamburg are Asian imports and exports. The largest foreign trade partner by far is China.
