OOCL terminals upgrade gate tech

The terminal division of Orient Overseas Container Lines will implement technology by Embarcadero Systems to manage the inbound, outbound and security gate operations at two of its East Coast terminals.

The carrier will deploy Embarcadero's smartGATE suite and Intelligent Camera system for gates at Global Terminal and Container Services in Jersey City, N.J., and at New York Container Terminal at Howland Hook in Staten Island, N.Y.

In a media release, OOCL said the new gate systems are part of a major terminal and technology upgrade that will enable the two hubs to more efficiently handle the projected growth in traffic at the Port of New York and New Jersey.

The new technologies will convert the gates at both terminals from a manual operation to an integrated gate system that will incorporate ID card readers, closed circuit camera technology, and advanced audio technologies.

The smartGATE suite will enable these terminals to relocate their clerks from separate gate booths into a centralized gate control center and allow truck drivers to remain in their truck cabs as their vehicle is processed through the facilities. smartGATE will provide Global Terminal and NYCT with faster turn times, increased gate efficiency and velocity, and better customer service, OOCL said.

The terminals also will be installing Embaracadero's container and chassis identification technology, Intelligent Camera, which captures container and chassis numbers, among other capabilities.

The new systems will be installed beginning this fall at nine inbound and six outbound lanes at Global Terminal's facility. In addition, the systems will be installed at nine inbound and six outbound lanes at NYCT.
