NY MARITIME CADETS SET FOR 8-WEEK CRUISE

About 500 students from State University of New York Maritime College will begin an eight-week training voyage Saturday aboard the college's new training ship, Empire State.

The Empire State, a converted breakbulk freighter, will sail for Tenerife in the Canary Islands, Gaeta in Italy and Plymouth, England. On board, first-class cadets, or seniors, will exercise operating leadership of the ship under the supervision of Capt. James C. DeSimone, the vessel master, and his staff and college faculty members. Second and third classmen will serve in supporting roles under the watch of the first classmen.

Cadets studying to be deck officers will learn navigation, ship handling and maintenance; those studying to become engineering officers will learn about diesel and steam boiler operations.
