Mississippi River Open for Navigation Despite Flooding

Navigation continues as normal on portions of the flooded Mississippi River, although there will be a temporary closure of the river today, according to a Coast Guard spokesman.

Chief Warrant Officer Lionel Bryant said that traffic continues to move through the flood zone, although there are some speed restrictions to prevent vessel wakes from causing levee damage.

Earlier this week the Army Corps of Engineers breached levees in the area. The action flooded thousands of acres of farmland but relieved the flood threat at Cairo, Ill., at the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers.

Bryant said the river will be closed temporarily around 1 p.m. today to let the Corps blast the second and last breach in the levee system.
