GROWS BY 11 SHIPSATHENS, Greece - The Greek-flag merchant fleet grew by 11 vessels in the first eight months of this year, to 2,165 vessels totaling 31.7 million gross tons, the Greek merchant-marine ministry said.
In that period, 91 ships joined the Hellenic Register while 80 ships were stricken off the roster, the ministry said. The average age of the ships leaving the registry was 26 years, while that of the ships joining was nine years, it said.
PUDONG BUILDING WHARF
TO HANDLE GRAIN SHIPS
SHANGHAI, China - Municipal officials said Tuesday that work has begun on a special grain wharf on the Huangpu River in the city's Pudong development area at a cost of some 80 million yuan ($9.6 million). It is due for completion in May.
With a quay nearly 800 feet long, the wharf can accommodate a 5,000-ton and a 300-ton ship at the same time.
