LYKES MAY BUY 4 CONTAINERSHIPS FROM POLISH YARD

Lykes Bros. Steamship Line is negotiating to buy four containerships, each capable of carrying 1,550 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs), from the Gdansk Shipyard in Poland, sources told The Journal of Commerce.

If the deal goes through, the order will be placed by German shipbroker Alfred C. Toepher of Hamburg, which manages most of Lykes' foreign flag containerships. The deal is said to be worth more than $100 million."Toepher handles all the brokerage for Lykes' foreign flag chartering, so where there is smoke there's fire," one shipping executive said.

However, a Lykes' spokesman, Ardley Hanemann, said, "We are not negotiating, nor is the company that manages our foreign flag vessels, with any Polish shipyard."
