House approves Water Resources bill

Ports and waterways projects got a boost as the House of Representatives approved legislation to authorize U.S. Army Corps of Engineers projects and studies for river and harbor navigation improvements.

The Water Resources Development Act of 2003 on Wednesday passed by a vote of 412-8. The legislation also approves comprehensive plans for flood and storm damage reduction and environmental restoration.

Among its provisions, the bill cuts non-federal cost-sharing from 60 percent to 35 percent for deep draft navigation projects for depths between 45 and 53 feet, and for ongoing development of 61 navigation projects. It also authorizes measures to streamline expedite Corps project delivery and permits.
