Georgia ports break box record

The Georgia Ports Authority on Tuesday said that it surpassed volume of 1.5 million-TEUs for the first time.

In the fiscal year from July 2002-June 2003, 1,505,278 TEUs were shipped through GPA ports, an increase of 31.5 percent against the previous year.

At a ceremony held at Garden City Terminal today, Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue said he is committed to building a new container berth at the Port of Savannah.

"Container berth 8 will expand the capacity of the port by 20 percent," Perdue said. "The new berth will include an additional 2,100 feet in linear berthing space, and 100 additional acres of container handling and storage area. When complete, the Port of Savannah will feature over 9,800 feet in linear berthing space, thus increasing what is already the largest single container terminal facility anywhere on the coast from Maine to Texas."

The Port of Brunswick posted a 25.2 percent increase in auto and machinery unit shipments compared to fiscal 2002.
