Japan's growing love affair with golf is turning into a bonanza for foreign club makers who last year sold the country more than 10 million golf clubs, according to customs figures published Monday.

The data show that Japan imported 10.61 million clubs in 1989, up 49 percent from the previous year.Golf remains a rich man's sport in Japan because of high green fees, but recently its popularity has been spreading among young people, housewives and female office workers.

Taiwan is Japan's best golf trading partner with 5.7 million clubs exported to Japan last year, followed by the United States with 4.48 million.

There are an estimated 15 million Japanese golfers - one in eight of the population.
