The transformation of the service jointly operated by Maersk Line and Mediterranean Shipping Co. from a strictly Suez Canal routing to a round-the-world service with the eastbound routing through the Panama Canal is the latest sign of how the recently expanded locks of the latter are attracting more capacity away from the Middle Eastern waterway. The change in Asia-to-East Coast routings following the Panama Canal expansion was long anticipated due to the transit time savings and the favorable economics from being able to deploy larger ships. According to early estimates of transit improvement via the Panama Canal routing, the sailing time from Shanghai to Newark, Norfolk and Baltimore will change from 34 days, 38 days and 40 days, to 25 days, 28 days and 30 days, respectively. Similarly, the transit from Ningbo to Newark, Norfolk and Baltimore will shorten from 33 days, 37 days and 39 days, to 27 days, 29 days, and 31 days. Transit times from Busan to Newark, Norfolk and Baltimore will fall from 28 days, 44 days and 46 days, to 23 days, 26 days and 28 days. Maersk cautioned that the estimated transit times could be different once berth windows are confirmed. The TP 12/Empire’s return will call on the ports of Salalah, Colombo and Singapore before returning to the Far East. Following the late June opening of its larger locks able to handle ships with capacities up to 14,000 twenty-foot-equivalent units, the Panama Canal has already ousted its Suez competitor as the leading route for all-water container services between the Far East and the U.S. East Coast, with a 57 percent share, according to industry analyst Alphaliner. Before the expansion, the canal could handle only ships with capacities of up to 5,000 TEUs. However, Maersk will continue to deploy eleven 8,500 TEU ships on the overhauled service, which it calls the TP12. MSC refers to the service as Empire. Maersk shared its plan to change one of the alliance’s two Suez services to the East Coast with a Panama Canal routing with JOC.com days before the expanded canal was innauguarted June 26. Maersk and MSC also operate two Panama services between Asia and East and Gulf coast ports . The competing Ocean Alliance involving CMA CGM, COSCO Container Lines, Orient Overseas Container Line and Evergreen Line is also gearing up for a reworked trans-Pacific network. The liners in April plan to deploy the most expansive all-water trans-Pacific service network to U.S. East and Gulf Coast ports that has been seen in years, according to U.S. Federal Maritime Commission Commissioner William Doyle told JOC.com “We are changing our TP12 service to provide a better product to shippers in Korea, Northern and Eastern China. By transiting the expanded Panama Canal, we will significantly reduce transit times into key ports on the US East Coast,” Klaus Rud Sejling, head of east-west network at Maersk, said in a statement. The largest global container line by capacity said it will also add a call to Busan on its westbound T10 service, which transits the Panama Canal, in September. By doing so, shippers moving goods from Busan to Savannah and Charleston will see transit times generally fall from 37 days and 36 days, to 27 and 29 days, respectively. Transit times won't be finalized until berth window are confirmed, Maersk said. Maersk said it will connect its TP11, a Suez service calling the East Coast, and the TP8 service, connecting Asia to the the ports of Prince Rupert and Long Beach, to create a pendulum service with 17 vessels of 8,500 TEUs that will enhance the service’s port network. He also noted the impact of that growth on multipurpose vessel capabilities. ”Vessels need to be stronger to accommodate these larger cargoes, which can be seen in the increase in crane capacities and the growing fleet of deck carriers,” Hennig said.Cosmatos Group last year moved the largest cargo it had moved in its 53-year history, handling a 690-ton, nine-meter-high component. Commercial realtor CBRE said in May that new warehouse construction in the south New Jersey-Philadelphia metro region totaled 11.6 million square feet in the first quarter of 2025, down 25.3% from the fourth quarter of 2024. Vacancy rates for Northeast warehouses reached 7.6% in the first quarter, compared to around 3% in 2022, marking 12 quarters of increasing vacancy rates. Maersk said in its first-quarter earnings release that it expects vacancy rates to remain close to the long-term 7% average as new construction better matches demand. For example, the MSC Sindy, due to dock at Nhava Sheva on June 5, has made calls to Shanghai, Ningbo and Singapore in what is evidently an ad-hoc rotation. “We are now seeing a lot of impromptu changes for MSC services out of India, with vessels swapped out and port calls rejigged,” a Mumbai-based freight forwarder who did not want to be identified told the Journal of Commerce. “The Asia surge seems to be driving that capacity shakeup.” Sources also noted that the Geneva-based liner is considering adding Vizhinjam Port in southern India to the HEX rotation, likely for the interim to support resurgent transshipment volumes, beginning with the MSC Nairobi X due to arrive in Nhava Sheva on June 9. With multiple changes in the cards, the service will now cover Nhava Sheva, Mundra, Vizhinjam, Sines, Valencia, Gioia Tauro, Genoa, Barcelona and Malaga, the sources said. An ocean carrier executive said liners are being “very aggressive on spot rates” to capitalize on the cargo surge, with so-called general rate increases (GRIs) implemented on June 1 and two other price hikes planned for mid-June and July 1. A half-dozen forwarders told the Journal of Commerce that spot rates this week are in the low $6,000s per FEU to the US West Coast and low $7,000s to the East Coast. Rate indexes, which take a week or two to capture the full rate gains, still showed a big jump this week. Platts, a sister company of the Journal of Commerce within S&amp;P Global, listed the spot rate from Asia to the West Coast as of Monday at $5,600 per FEU, up 33% from just last week. The East Coast rate was $6,500 per FEU, up 25%. Platts data shows the West Coast spot rate has rocketed 173% higher since mid-April, with the East Coast rate doubling over that time. By comparison, as US imports from Asia began to climb in May 2021 following the COVID-related slump, spot rates to the US rose about 20% from mid-April. <div class="wrapper-narrow"><dynamic-object type="jocchartid" resource-id="e8c13a3e-9f5a-412f-8741-adbf5e1a7779"></dynamic-object></div>Carriers are looking to ride the higher rates as long as they can before the fresh vessel capacity that is making its way to the trans-Pacific in the form of extra-loaders and new services begins to dull the momentum. “It seems like the next [rate] increase or two will be the last ones,” said Jason Cook, CEO of Ardent Global Logistics. “I’m getting the impression that this capacity is already finding its way into the trade.” The new capacity is especially significant on the trade lanes from Asia to the West Coast. Carriers in June have increased capacity by 12.8% and plan another 16.5% hike in July, Alan Murphy, CEO of Sea-Intelligence Maritime Analysis, said in his Sunday Spotlight newsletter. “In total, this is an injection of 397,000 TEUs of capacity in June/July compared to the situation just three weeks ago,” Murphy said. <h3>Import surge coming to Southern California </h3>The surge in imports from Asia is tied to the Trump administration’s time-limited pause in higher tariffs. The pauses are expiring over the next two months — one on July 9 on imports from most nations except for China, and another in mid-August on the huge <a href="https://www.joc.com/article/federal-court-ruling-blocking-tariffs-resets-shipping-outlook-6013402">145% tariff on imports from China that has been reduced to 30%</a>. The White House says it is busy negotiating new trade deals in the meantime. As those deadlines approach, the import spike is manifesting itself in the Los Angeles-Long Beach port complex, which handles about 50% of US imports from Asia. According to data from both ports, the Southern California complex is projecting a huge volume of imports over the next few weeks. Los Angeles, which this week will handle about 92,000 TEUs of laden imports, is forecasting more than 103,000 TEUs next week and 112,000 TEUs in the week of June 15. Long Beach, which will handle about 75,000 import TEUs next week, is projecting imports of more than 90,000 TEUs per week during the last three weeks of June. “Clearly shippers are trying to catch up on lost time out of China,” one forwarder said. Bookings out of Southeast Asia are quite strong, while bookings from China, which spiked after the May 12 “pause” announcement, are now “slightly weaker, but nothing that will throw the trade off,” said James Caradonna, executive vice president of the forwarder Spedag America. <h3>Short, but intense, peak season expected </h3>Based on the significant level of frontloading that has already taken place from Southeast Asia and China, forwarders say this year’s peak shipping season will start earlier and be noticeably shorter than typical peak seasons, which run from August through October. “The peak season has already started,” said Christian Sur, executive vice president of ocean freight contract logistics at the forwarder Unique Logistics International. “The peak of the peak will be in the second half of June.” For that reason, carriers are attempting to maintain cargo flow and bookings from their core customers so that when imports fall off, liners will maintain what business is left for the remainder of the year, the carrier executive said. Carriers right now are slow-walking peak season surcharges (PSSs), which are applied to cargo owners’ service contracts and forwarders’ named-account (NAC) rates, even while they announce additional spot rate increases, the executive said. “The lines are very cautious about PSSs...,” the source said. The world of LTL is slow to embrace change. Business anachronisms permeate current supply chain processes. These vestiges of the way things used to work define the LTL freight transportation procurement process of many modern shippers.David Knuth, logistics specialist at IEWC, a global supplier of cable and wire based in Wisconsin, is happy to have modernized the RFP process, automating the entire LTL bidding procedure with Bid$ense, SMC³’s automated truckload and LTL freight transportation sourcing solution. But when prompted, he can still recall what once was.In his previous job, a large part of his duties were consumed by creating an intermodal bid package for carriers. In a spreadsheet, Knuth detailed the company’s volumes lane by lane, taking care to delete any errant keystrokes or misleading data. He would then email out the information to each carrier, taking time to respond to detailed technical questions about the spreadsheet data. Finally, he had to compile all the results, create an algorithm that would compare the carriers on each lane, and award the business.“It was a huge undertaking. It took about four months to do,” Knuth said of the old process. “It was almost a full-time job for that part of the year, every year.”In his new job at IEWC, he sat down with Bid$ense on day one and was amazed at the capabilities. Knuth had never before used a bid tool. SMC³’s latest versions of Bid$ense automate the process even further, taking truckload and LTL RFPs entirely online. The tool draws on RFP best-practices protocols to streamline the bidding communication process, enabling bidding carriers to respond accurately and promptly to shipper requests. The solution also does all the distribution work automatically, electronically submitting shipper bid data to carriers based on their actual service capabilities and performance records. Carriers are alerted with timely prompts for RFP deliverables, so shippers aren’t waiting by the phone for responses.Another benefit of automating the process is the data-cleansing assistance. When Knuth sent spreadsheets to carriers, data errors might cloud the bidding process; he might have to resend data or simply accept a price that did not truly reflect the costs of doing business. Data cleansing is incredibly beneficial, he said.The spreadsheet technique also made bidding analysis an onerous task. Since Bid$ense automates and streamlines the entire RFP process, intensive examination is now simple. SMC³ knows that each bid has more than one best outcome. With uniform responses from each carrier, shippers can quickly rank results and create an unlimited quantity of what-if scenarios to make the optimal procurement decision.Jesse Burnett of Central Garden &amp; Pet experiences many of the same benefits. Founded in 1980, Central Garden &amp; Pet has spent the last three decades growing from a small garden supply company to a provider of a range of products from dog chews and bird seed to soil supplements and natural insecticides. For much of its life, the company shipped these disparate goods via LTL and truckload carriers to retailers throughout the country, relying on each business unit to negotiate directly with their freight transportation providers. This arrangement worked fairly well for a small company, but as Central Garden &amp; Pet expanded, leadership decided to consolidate decision making.Burnett helped centralize the transportation decision making in 2015 with SMC³’s Bid$ense. Before Bid$ense, every business unit operated independently as far as negotiating with carriers.“There were a lot of different things just floating around,” he said. “We didn’t have master agreements in place; no national pricing at all. The pricing from carriers was just all over the place, depending on where you were.”The transformations he saw with Bid$ense were immediate. Burnett has been using the tool about every other year since its implementation at the company. Central Garden and Pet’s $19.6 million 2019 LTL bid saved the company just more than 9 percent when compared to its historical average. For Burnett, though, bid automation extends far beyond savings.“We knew that we weren’t getting the best pricing offer from our carriers just because nothing was centralized,” he continued. “We knew that if we combined everything from all these business units and paired it with one corporate offering, then it would drive some cost benefit with it.”When the company initially decided to centralize bid procurement, executives researched a number of different methodologies and technologies. In the end, though, Burnett found that Bid$ense was both widespread and well known, and that his carrier partners already knew how to use the application. Burnett also highlighted the data-cleansing process as a major benefit, saying the rigorous process ensures that carriers always return the best price.“It definitely has helped drive savings,” he said. “Any time you go out there and you drive that competitiveness with the carriers and they know they’re in a bid environment, it seems to sharpen their pencils.”Transportation procurement is an integral part of the modern supply chain. With Bid$ense, shippers can develop a strategic implementation plan that saves them time and money, but also helps them create strong relationships with their carrier partners. These carriers appreciate the solution’s data-cleansing process; when carriers receive a complete shipment history and future volume forecast, they don’t have to guess on pricing. If there’s one immutable truth in the world of logistics, it’s this: LTL is an inherently complex form of transportation. Tariffs, rates, DIM weights, transit times — it’s enough to confuse even seasoned logistics professionals. However, many of these college supply chain programs are now global in scope, focusing on worldwide supply chain management instead of the intricacies of specialized domestic transportation. And even these programs, which used to be widespread, are becoming less common. LTL is not an industry of broad-brush strokes; supply chain professionals really need a pointillistic understanding of the logistics of LTL in order to excel in the industry. Accelerating Need for Dedicated LTL Education This lack of specified training put the onus on employers to prepare new hires with the LTL knowledge needed to do their jobs. Dedicated LTL study is a necessity, not a luxury. At the same time, changes in LTL and the broader supply chain world are accelerating. The reliance on e-commerce has ballooned since the start of the pandemic, and last-mile LTL shipments and related e-commerce strains on the supply chain won’t diminish once social distancing abates. That genie isn’t going back into the bottle. So supply chain employers need logistics workers that are fully versed in all aspects of the industry, ready to solve unique shipping and delivery problems based on their extensive supply chain knowledge But why care about LTL? It’s been reported that some shippers in today’s world are no longer concerned with what mode is used to ship their goods. A Multimodal Approach Ensures On-Time Delivery This mode agnosticism means supply chain stakeholders have to be well versed in all modes of transportation. As unforeseen weather events and other disruptions, such as protests, become more common, savvy logistics employees will need to be armed with familiarity of all modes, not just the most popular, to ensure that freight is delivered on time, without damage, and in the most financially expedient way possible.
