KY. CITY GETS STRIP MINING BAN

Strip mining will be banned near a reservoir that provides water for Pineville, Ky., and much of Bell County, Ky., state Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Secretary Carl Bradley ordered April 8.

Mr. Bradley's decision came in response to a petition by the city of Pineville seeking a ban on surface mining in the 2,400 acres that make up Cannon Creek Lake's watershed. State officials said Pineville apparently was the only city in Eastern Kentucky that had ever asked for such a ban.The petition was submitted after D&N Processing, Middlesboro, Ky., applied for a permit to strip mine within a half-mile of the lake.
