US Steel Exports in 2012 Expected to Set Record

Government data showed U.S. steel exports in October totaled 1.19 million tons, down 12.1 percent from 1.06 million tons in September but up 3 year-over-year, the American Institute for International Steel reported today.

Exports to North American Free Trade Agreement countries and the smaller steel export markets in Asia and the European Union increased on a month-to-month basis, offsetting declines in other markets, according to David Phelps, AIIS president.

Year-to-date, steel exports were 11.78 million tons, rising 6.8 percent compared to the same period last year.

“The reversal of the downward trend experienced in recent months for steel exports has solidified 2012 as on track to set a new steel export record for the year,” Phelps said.
