GATX LOGISTICS, J.B. HUNT SIGN JOINT-SERVICE AGREEMENT

GATX Logistics and J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc. Monday signed a joint service agreement to provide logistics services to customers throughout North America.

J. Michael Seals, president of J.B Hunt Logistics Inc. in Lowell, Ark., told a press briefing at the National Industrial Transportation League conference that the two companies had been discussing the joint venture since the spring.J.B. Hunt is a nationwide truckload carrier and GATX Logistics is a provider of third-party logistics services to manufacturers and retailers.

Michael J. Gardener, executive vice president of operations for GATX Logistics in Jacksonville, Fla., said the companies will move immediately to explore expansion opportunities in Mexico. He said they plan a trip there in two weeks.

Both companies said the trend in transportation today is toward one-stop logistics shopping. In the new service offering, Hunt will provide its nationwide truckload transportation capabilities in conjunction with the warehousing and material-handling expertise offered by GATX.

Mr. Seals said the marketplace is looking for integrated service providers. "I think we'll see more of this in the future," he said.
