EU SMOOTHS WAY FOR TELECOM VENTURE

European Competition Commissioner Karel Van Miert said Monday he had agreed in principle with Germany and France in a decision that could clear the way for approval of the Atlas telecommunications joint venture between France Telecom and Deutsche Telekom.

The commissioner also said the Phoenix venture between Atlas and U.S. carrier Sprint Corp. would be part of the same package and decided on at the same time.The Atlas and Phoenix ventures are both aimed at providing data transmission services to major companies.

Mr. Van Miert also said France Telecom and Deutsche Telekom had agreed to keep their data transmission subsidiaries out of the Atlas venture until 1998.
