TVA Hiring Freeze

Effective ImmediatelyKNOXVILLE, Tenn. - A hiring freeze will go into effect immediately throughout the Tennessee Valley Authority as a measure to increase efficiency and reduce costs, TVA Chairman Marvin Runyon said Friday.

We must take a long, hard look at how we can improve productivity in TVA, Mr. Runyon said. This hiring freeze will permit us to take advantage of attrition as a way to reduce manpower and, therefore, the cost of doing business.

The freeze, which will last indefinitely, stops hiring from outside the agency although pending job offers will be honored. We will fill job vacancies when possible with current employees by providing them the training they need to handle new assignments, Mr. Runyon said.

Mr. Runyon said the freeze will not affect the hiring of temporary employees who perform supplemental work at TVA plants.

The TVA has approximately 33,300 employees throughout its seven-state area. The normal annual attrition rate for the TVA is 4 percent to 6 percent.
