Turnaround for Kansas City Southern

Rail operator Kansas City Southern Industries Inc. on Thursday posted a quarterly profit, reversing a year-earlier loss, on a pickup in cargoes and a lift from a Mexican railroad in which it has a stake.

The Kansas City, Mo., transport group said second-quarter net profit was $9.2 million compared with a net loss of $500,000.

Revenue was $153.9 million, up from $146.3 million.

"The results were driven by the Kansas City Southern Railway Co.'s and Grupo Transportacion Ferroviaria Mexicana S.A. de C.V.'s improved operating and financial results," the company said in a news release.
