John Sievwright was named president and chief operating officer of Merrill Lynch Japan. He is currently head of global financial futures and options and co-chairman of Merrill Lynch Futures.Mr. Sievwright, who will work closely with Merrill Lynch Japan Chairman Hisashi Moriya, will be responsible for all Merrill activities in Japan.

SOCIETE GENERALE SECURITIES CORP.

Stuart Goldberg and Hiroki ''Rocky'' Kurita were named asset-backed traders. Both traders worked at Smith Barney until its merger with Salomon Brothers.

Mr. Goldberg joins Societe Generale as director and head of asset-backed trading and will report to Managing Director Richard Brounstein. Mr. Kurita joins the firm as vice-president of asset-backed trading and will report to Mr. Goldberg.

James McDermott was named chairman and chief executive of the Wall Street specialist firm in bank, thrift and financial services companies.

Mr. McDermott replaced Charles Lott, who stepped down from two positions. Additionally, Joseph Berry was named president and chief operating officer and Stanley Wells was been elevated to vice chairman.

Mr. McDermott, 46, has been with the firm since 1977. He succeeded Mr. Lott as director of research in 1982, and as president and chief operating officer in 1990.
