Grace Japan K.K. Plans

Meat Packaging Unit

NEW YORK - W.R. Grace & Co. said its Grace Japan K.K. subsidiary will spend over $7 million to install a new shrink wrap packaging operation at its plant in Atsugi to meet Japan's growing demand for fresh red meat. Manufacturing is expected to begin in early 1989.

Japan is one of the few major industrial societies where beef consumption is increasing, and we expect this trend to continue into the 1990s. Over a four-year period ending 1986, per capita beef consumption increased at an

average annual rate of more than 4 percent, said J. Murfree Butler, a Grace senior vice president and group operations officer of Grace Specialty Chemicals Co.

The equipment being installed is designed primarily for the fresh red meat market, but these packaging materials may be used to extend shelf life of products such as processed meats, fish, poultry and produce.
