Intermodal stokes Norfolk Southern profit

Rail transportation company Norfolk Southern Corp. said Wednesday that its second-quarter profit jumped more than 55 percent, on higher coal and merchandise shipping volumes.

Quarterly income rose to $213 million from $137 million in the year-ago period.

Total operating revenue climbed 11 percent to a record $1.81 billion from $1.63 billion on higher volumes across its divisions, the Norfolk, Va.-based company said. General merchandise revenue grew 9 percent to $1.03 billion and coal revenue increased 9 percent to $424 million, while intermodal revenue rose 21 percent to $364 million.
