WHOLESALE PRICE INDEX

CLIMBS 0.2 PERCENT IN JAPANJapan's wholesale price index rose 0.2 percent in the first 10 days of this month from Feb. 21-28, the Bank of Japan said in a preliminary report Friday.

On a year-on-year basis, the index jumped 3.6 percent, it said.

PARIS - The average unemployment rate for the industrialized countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development reached 6 percent in January, compared with 6.4 percent in January 1989, the OECD said.

The decline came from improvement of unemployment in European OECD members, although "the decline in European unemployment appears to have bottomed out in recent months," the OECD said in a communique.

LONDON - U.K. retail prices rose 7.5 percent in the year through February,

mainly because of higher food prices and increases in public transport costs, the Central Statistical Office said Friday.

February retail prices rose 0.6 percent from January, the CSO said.

in January, prices rose 0.6 percent from December and 7.7 percent from a year earlier.

MEXICO CITY - Mexican consumer prices rose 1 percent in the first half of March, down from an increase of 1.4 percent in the first half of February, the Bank of Mexico reported Friday.

The inflation rate this year to date is 8.1 percent, compared to 4.4 percent a year ago.
