CONSUMER PRICE INDEX IN TOKYO UP FOR MONTH AND YEAR

Tokyo's consumer price index for March averaged 104.5 (1990=100), up a seasonally adjusted 0.1 percent from February and up 2.1 percent from a year earlier, Japan's Management and Coordination Agency announced Friday.

March's year-to-year inflation rate for Tokyo is down from a 2.2 percent increase recorded in February.The consumer price index for the entire nation averaged 103.9 in February, up an adjusted 0.2 percent from January and up 2.0 percent from a year earlier, the agency announced. The nationwide data lags the Tokyo data by one month.

Excluding more volatile fresh food prices, Tokyo March CPI was up 2.6 percent from a year earlier, while the nationwide February CPI was up 2.3 percent.

Consumer prices for Tokyo in the current 1991-92 fiscal year (April to March) were up an average 2.9 percent.
