STRIKES GOLD IN NIGERNIAMEY, Niger - Canadian company Etruscan Enterprises Ltd. said it had made a significant gold find in the Liptako region of western Niger.

A company statement said the discovery at Koma Bangou "suggested a deposit of world proportions, perhaps comparable to Sadiola in Mali."

Mali's Sadiola Hill mine is being developed to produce an annual 7.65 metric tons of gold from the end of 1996.

"Etruscan now envisages a very big mine, which implies an increase in exploration and definition of reserves of gold-bearing minerals," the statement said.

Etruscan signed an exploration and exploitation agreement with the government of Niger in June 1994 and started definition work in October.

A dozen gold-bearing sites have been identified in the Liptako region, which borders Burkina Faso.
