USDA EXPANDS CALIF.

MEDFLY QUARANTINE

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of Agriculture Monday said it has expanded the Los Angeles County, Calif., Mediterranean fruit fly quarantine area because of additional finds of the insect and to prevent further spread of the citrus-threatening pest.

The USDA said areas near Lakewood, Glendale, La Canada, Flintridge and Pasadena would be included in the new quarantine areas.

Three additional treatments for harvested citrus fruit also are being imposed by the USDA to destroy the Medfly. They are: fumigation with methyl bromide at normal atmospheric pressure; fumigation with methyl bromide plus refrigeration; and cold treatment.

The new actions became effective Feb. 23, the USDA said.
