CHEMICAL MARKETS SULFUR PRODUCTION ROSE IN JANUARY

Combined production of Frasch-recovered sulfur and elemental sulfur in January totaled 794,000 metric tons, up 7 percent from January 1987, according to the Bureau of Mines.

Shipments of these combined products were 9 percent higher than in January last year. At the close of January, producers' stocks totaled 2.25 million tons, a decrease of more than 570,000 tons from the same month a year ago.Exports of sulfur for the month amounted to 61,000 tons, representing a 13 percent drop from January 1987. Imports also dove 13 percent, totaling 166,000 tons from Canada and Mexico.

Domestic consumption of Frasch and recovered sulfur during the month was higher than that reported in any month of 1987.
