PLASTIC RESINS OUTPUT

ROSE IN FEBRUARYPlastic resins production reached nearly 4.1 billion pounds in February, 1990, up 3.7 percent from the same month last year, according to statistics released by the Society of the Plastics Industry Inc.

February's production figures were down approximately 3.6 percent from January. Year-to-date production of plastic resins totaled nearly 8.3 billion pounds through February, up 1.3 percent from the same period a year ago.

Sales and captive use of plastic resins in February reached just over 4.3 billion pounds, a 6.4 percent increase over the same month a year ago, but down 2.8 percent from January, 1990 figures.

DU PONT INTRODUCES

CFC ALTERNATIVE

Du Pont Co. Monday introduced an alternative to chlorofluorocarbons for cleaning printed circuit boards.

The biodegradable cleaning agent, called Axarel 38, has no ozone depletion potential and can perform many of the same functions for which CFC-113 is used, the company said.

Axarel 38 is designed for use in a new cleaning process that combines the new cleaning agent with a water rinse.

In most cases, the material cost to clean a printed circuit board is less with Axarel than with CFC-113-based products, Du Pont said. The new solvent cannot be used with cleaning equipment designed to use CFC-113.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimated that nearly 200 million pounds of CFC-113 were used in 1986 in the electronics industry.

OCCIDENTAL TO UPGRADE

VINYLS PLANT IN TEXAS

Occidental Chemical Corp.'s Vinyls division is investing $10 million in its Pasadena, Texas, polyvinyl chloride plant to improve production efficiency, the company said.

The improvements will be made starting in the third quarter of this year, and are scheduled for completion by late 1991. They will allow the plant to operate at its full permitted annual capacity of 1.4 billion pounds.

Occidental, based in Dallas, said that by the end of next year, it will have more than doubled the capacity of the Pasasdena plant since its acquisition from Tenneco Corp. in 1986.
