For the first time in four years, United States containerized agriculture exports have fallen compared with the previous year. Chinese tariffs in the first nine months of 2019 cost the outbound supply chain approximately 40,000 TEU of containerized cargo compared with the same 2018 period, according to data from PIERS, a sister product of JOC.com within IHS Markit. Still, the 0.5 percent decline pales in comparison with the last time volume contracted — in 2015, when outbound containerized agriculture shipments fell 3.7 percent.The most recent dip reveals the damage of the US-China trade war in the short-term and the darkening...

A massive decline in China-bound shipments has been offset in part by increases to other Asian countries, but even that demand is beginning to wane, dragging total year-to-date US agricultural exports down for the first time in four years.

The financial health of the powerful International Longshore and Warehouse Union is in jeopardy as the union seeks to avoid paying $19 million in damages to a Portland terminal operator over disruptive job actions years ago.
