He predicted their overall market share may eventually reach as high as 25 percent. He pointed out, however, that European retailers are doing a great deal of research and moving cautiously," in the U.S. market, which is nearly as mature or saturated as its European counterparts. Hunt’s intermodal division, said on the earnings call. “We have a handful of customers that said, 'Hey, I might have extra business in July.' The fees apply only when a shipper out of Southern California exceeds its weekly contracted allotment, but the added costs can be substantial. “At $1,500 extra, our (competing) truckload rates become far cheaper,” said one J.B. Hunt customer who did not want to be identified. “That’s the trifecta of bad: higher rates, slower transit, and increased risk of theft.” Customers have also questioned whether J.B. Hunt incurs $1,500 in costs to reposition equipment to Southern California, or whether the surcharge reflects an attempt by J.B. Hunt to compensate for what it could not obtain during earlier contract negotiations. A second J.B. Hunt customer said they would take steps to avoid the fees. “We will look for opportunities not to pay the $1,500. That’s the short answer,” the source said. “We feel really confident that we’ll be successful.” Shippers said there are multiple ways to sidestep the charges, especially when only a few containers exceed weekly contractual limits. Kyriacos Panayides, CEO of MPV ship operator AAL Shipping, said that after the most recent attacks, more “non-western operators” are now considering the Cape of Good Hope route around southern Africa. “The Red Sea passage vessels on radar have reduced dramatically since last week, down to only...(about) 30 vessels per day,” he told the Journal of Commerce. Market experts said the ship diversions could artificially reduce the number of MPVs available for breakbulk and project cargo loads in the short term as the entire fleet shifts to the longer Cape route. However, the Trump administration decided to delay its deadline for implementing reciprocal tariffs to Aug. 1. “We expect Q3/Q4 to be steady and then to pick up from Q2 2026,” Nair told the Journal of Commerce. “Vessel operators are hesitating taking vessels on time charter and cargo flows are shifting a bit, making the whole market super volatile and unsecure.” Nair added that it is “difficult to budget” in the current breakbulk and project cargo market. <h3>Misinformation, uncertainty are rife </h3>Nair also spoke of misinformation circling on risk mitigation strategies related to the US trade uncertainty. With President Donald Trump’s threat at the weekend to impose 30% tariffs on all European Union imports from Aug. 1, there is no letting up on the financial pressure facing the automotive industry. “Due to import tariffs the company is currently unable to sell the Volvo ES90 profitably in the United States, while ES90 margins are also under pressure in Europe for the same reason,” Volvo told investors in a statement Monday. The Swedish carmaker said the $1.2 billion write-down reflected adjustments in expected production volumes of its two latest electric car models following the tariffs and “rightsizing the assets to the known market realities.” An impairment charge is the writing down of the value of an asset to reflect its reduced worth. The US imposed 25% tariffs on the steel and aluminum sectors in March and expanded that to include automobiles on April 3 and automobile parts on May 3, also set at 25%, up from 2.5%. Then, last Saturday, Trump, frustrated at a perceived lack of progress on trade negotiations, threatened to impose 30% tariffs on all imports from the EU from Aug. 1. The US is the largest market for Europe’s automotive industry, comprising 23% of the EU’s total car exports, according to data from the European Commission. With such a significant market share, auto exports from the port of Antwerp-Bruges, a huge automotive hub in Europe that handled more than three million vehicles last year, have been particularly hard hit by the US tariffs. There has been “a clear decline” in vehicle exports to the US via Antwerp since May as tariffs dragged down the numbers, the port noted in a statement this week <a href="https://www.joc.com/article/strong-h1-volumes-space-crunch-keep-antwerp-terminals-under-pressure-6043917">on its first-half operations</a>. In the first six months of the year, 15.9% fewer new cars and vans (76,089 units) and 31.5% fewer trucks and heavy vehicles (11,751 units) were exported. <h3>Eurozone pushed to ‘edge of recession’ </h3>The US tariffs will do no favors for Europe’s economies. Research consultancy Oxford Economics noted in a report this week that the threat of 30% tariffs was an escalation of the trade war that will push the eurozone economy to the edge of recession, with growth stagnating over the coming quarters. “Using our global economic model, we estimate that this could cut eurozone GDP growth by up to 0.3 percentage point annually over the next two years,” the report said. The 30% tariff threat surprised EU officials who reportedly thought they were close to a preliminary agreement with the US. Brussels has subsequently dusted off plans to impose its own targeted retaliatory measures on US products should the tariffs be implemented, but it is still holding trade talks with Washington. “The latest decision to delay its planned retaliatory measures until next month shows the EU still hopes to reach a deal before the Aug. 1 deadline,” the Oxford Economics report noted. Oxford Economics found US tariffs were also raising uncertainty and damaging business confidence in the EU, and by extension corporate investment, a sentiment that was picked up in the latest S&amp;P Global Germany Business Outlook survey. “Businesses report concerns about disruption to both demand and supply chains from increased US trade tariffs and the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, with the related uncertainty expected to limit business investment and growth,” Phil Smith, economics associate director at S&amp;P Global Market Intelligence, said in his analysis of the survey results. “The current geopolitical backdrop means that firms overall remain only cautiously optimistic about the outlook and are by no means fully loosening the purse strings, with growth forecasts and investment intentions still running below their respective pre-pandemic averages,” Smith added. The financial cost of US tariffs on the European automotive industry has been illustrated by Volvo Group, which was forced to take a $1.2 billion impairment charge in the second quarter as tariffs undermined profitability. With President Donald Trump’s threat at the weekend to impose 30% tariffs on all European Union imports from Aug. 1, there is no letting up on the financial pressure facing the automotive industry. “Due to import tariffs the company is currently unable to sell the Volvo ES90 profitably in the United States, while ES90 margins are also under pressure in Europe for the same reason,” Volvo told investors in a statement Monday. The Swedish carmaker said the $1.2 billion write-down reflected adjustments in expected production volumes of its two latest electric car models following the tariffs and “rightsizing the assets to the known market realities.” An impairment charge is the writing down of the value of an asset to reflect its reduced worth. The US imposed 25% tariffs on the steel and aluminum sectors in March and expanded that to include automobiles on April 3 and automobile parts on May 3, also set at 25%, up from 2.5%. Then, last Saturday, Trump, frustrated at a perceived lack of progress on trade negotiations, threatened to impose 30% tariffs on all imports from the EU from Aug. 1. The US is the largest market for Europe’s automotive industry, comprising 23% of the EU’s total car exports, according to data from the European Commission. With such a significant market share, auto exports from the port of Antwerp-Bruges, a huge automotive hub in Europe that handled more than three million vehicles last year, have been particularly hard hit by the US tariffs. There has been “a clear decline” in vehicle exports to the US via Antwerp since May as tariffs dragged down the numbers, the port noted in a statement this week on its first-half operations . In the first six months of the year, 15.9% fewer new cars and vans (76,089 units) and 31.5% fewer trucks and heavy vehicles (11,751 units) were exported. The National Association of Waterfront Employers (NAWE) sent a letter to the Senate Appropriations Committee on Monday asking for continued support of the Clean Ports Program, a $3 billion grant program funded under the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act. NAWE President Carl Bentzel said in the letter the grants help US ports invest in newer, more efficient yard equipment and allow them to handle more volumes in limited space. “Ports are facing increasing demand and growing global competition while trying to operate with aging cargo-handling equipment, limited funding for capital improvement, and limitations on space for capital expansion,” Bentzel said. He added that US manufacturers benefit from more investments in clean ports projects, furthering the Trump administration’s agenda of boosting domestic industries. “Many of the Clean Port projects are reliant on US manufacturing of cargo handling equipment,” Bentzel wrote. “This equipment is not only driving a vital US manufacturing sector but will be a foundational industry for the revitalization of the US maritime industrial base.” <h3>EPA faces cuts </h3>The letter arrives as Congress takes up spending proposals that will likely include steep cuts to the EPA, which administers the Clean Ports Program. In May, EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin proposed a $4.2 billion budget for his agency for the next fiscal year, about half of what it received for 2025. House Republicans are working on a bill that would provide about $7 billion for the EPA, a 23% cut from 2025 spending. The Clean Ports Program awarded 54 grants in 2024. Almost all of the program’s grant funding went toward zero-emission port equipment, with a smaller portion funding other initiatives such as developing plans to reduce emissions. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey <a href="https://www.joc.com/article/us-ports-plan-upgrades-to-electric-yard-equipment-after-securing-epa-grants-5782145">received the largest single grant</a>, $451 million, to replace diesel-powered yard equipment. The Port of Los Angeles received the second-largest award at $411 million. The long lead times for ordering and purchasing new yard equipment mean the grant monies have only trickled out. Of the $2.9 billion in grant awards, about $417,000 has been spent so far, according to USASpending.gov. The world of LTL is slow to embrace change. Business anachronisms permeate current supply chain processes. These vestiges of the way things used to work define the LTL freight transportation procurement process of many modern shippers.David Knuth, logistics specialist at IEWC, a global supplier of cable and wire based in Wisconsin, is happy to have modernized the RFP process, automating the entire LTL bidding procedure with Bid$ense, SMC³’s automated truckload and LTL freight transportation sourcing solution. But when prompted, he can still recall what once was.In his previous job, a large part of his duties were consumed by creating an intermodal bid package for carriers. In a spreadsheet, Knuth detailed the company’s volumes lane by lane, taking care to delete any errant keystrokes or misleading data. He would then email out the information to each carrier, taking time to respond to detailed technical questions about the spreadsheet data. Finally, he had to compile all the results, create an algorithm that would compare the carriers on each lane, and award the business.“It was a huge undertaking. It took about four months to do,” Knuth said of the old process. “It was almost a full-time job for that part of the year, every year.”In his new job at IEWC, he sat down with Bid$ense on day one and was amazed at the capabilities. Knuth had never before used a bid tool. SMC³’s latest versions of Bid$ense automate the process even further, taking truckload and LTL RFPs entirely online. The tool draws on RFP best-practices protocols to streamline the bidding communication process, enabling bidding carriers to respond accurately and promptly to shipper requests. The solution also does all the distribution work automatically, electronically submitting shipper bid data to carriers based on their actual service capabilities and performance records. Carriers are alerted with timely prompts for RFP deliverables, so shippers aren’t waiting by the phone for responses.Another benefit of automating the process is the data-cleansing assistance. When Knuth sent spreadsheets to carriers, data errors might cloud the bidding process; he might have to resend data or simply accept a price that did not truly reflect the costs of doing business. Data cleansing is incredibly beneficial, he said.The spreadsheet technique also made bidding analysis an onerous task. Since Bid$ense automates and streamlines the entire RFP process, intensive examination is now simple. SMC³ knows that each bid has more than one best outcome. With uniform responses from each carrier, shippers can quickly rank results and create an unlimited quantity of what-if scenarios to make the optimal procurement decision.Jesse Burnett of Central Garden &amp; Pet experiences many of the same benefits. Founded in 1980, Central Garden &amp; Pet has spent the last three decades growing from a small garden supply company to a provider of a range of products from dog chews and bird seed to soil supplements and natural insecticides. For much of its life, the company shipped these disparate goods via LTL and truckload carriers to retailers throughout the country, relying on each business unit to negotiate directly with their freight transportation providers. This arrangement worked fairly well for a small company, but as Central Garden &amp; Pet expanded, leadership decided to consolidate decision making.Burnett helped centralize the transportation decision making in 2015 with SMC³’s Bid$ense. Before Bid$ense, every business unit operated independently as far as negotiating with carriers.“There were a lot of different things just floating around,” he said. “We didn’t have master agreements in place; no national pricing at all. The pricing from carriers was just all over the place, depending on where you were.”The transformations he saw with Bid$ense were immediate. Burnett has been using the tool about every other year since its implementation at the company. Central Garden and Pet’s $19.6 million 2019 LTL bid saved the company just more than 9 percent when compared to its historical average. For Burnett, though, bid automation extends far beyond savings.“We knew that we weren’t getting the best pricing offer from our carriers just because nothing was centralized,” he continued. “We knew that if we combined everything from all these business units and paired it with one corporate offering, then it would drive some cost benefit with it.”When the company initially decided to centralize bid procurement, executives researched a number of different methodologies and technologies. In the end, though, Burnett found that Bid$ense was both widespread and well known, and that his carrier partners already knew how to use the application. Burnett also highlighted the data-cleansing process as a major benefit, saying the rigorous process ensures that carriers always return the best price.“It definitely has helped drive savings,” he said. “Any time you go out there and you drive that competitiveness with the carriers and they know they’re in a bid environment, it seems to sharpen their pencils.”Transportation procurement is an integral part of the modern supply chain. With Bid$ense, shippers can develop a strategic implementation plan that saves them time and money, but also helps them create strong relationships with their carrier partners. These carriers appreciate the solution’s data-cleansing process; when carriers receive a complete shipment history and future volume forecast, they don’t have to guess on pricing. If there’s one immutable truth in the world of logistics, it’s this: LTL is an inherently complex form of transportation. Dedicated LTL study is a necessity, not a luxury. At the same time, changes in LTL and the broader supply chain world are accelerating. The reliance on e-commerce has ballooned since the start of the pandemic, and last-mile LTL shipments and related e-commerce strains on the supply chain won’t diminish once social distancing abates. That genie isn’t going back into the bottle. So supply chain employers need logistics workers that are fully versed in all aspects of the industry, ready to solve unique shipping and delivery problems based on their extensive supply chain knowledge But why care about LTL? It’s been reported that some shippers in today’s world are no longer concerned with what mode is used to ship their goods. A Multimodal Approach Ensures On-Time Delivery This mode agnosticism means supply chain stakeholders have to be well versed in all modes of transportation. As unforeseen weather events and other disruptions, such as protests, become more common, savvy logistics employees will need to be armed with familiarity of all modes, not just the most popular, to ensure that freight is delivered on time, without damage, and in the most financially expedient way possible.
