Neither winter weather, successive holiday peaks nor significant changes in distribution patterns caused by disruption at U.S. West Coast ports dampened profit for the second-largest U.S. and third-largest global transport operator. Higher base rates, yields and volumes and gains from lower fuel prices outweighed a drop in fuel surcharge revenue and the negative impact of a strong U.S. dollar on exports, company executives said Tuesday. In fact, congestion at West Coast ports locked in a labor dispute during the quarter led to a surge in profitable time-definite air freight business at core division FedEx Express. FedEx expects more lift this year from a stronger U.S. economy, which is anchoring the global economy and encouraging modest worldwide growth in 2015. In the U.S., improving “fundamentals” will support real gross domestic product growth of 3 percent or more for several quarters, Executive Vice President T. Michael Glenn told Wall Street analysts. “Our annual U.S. GDP forecast is 3.1 percent growth for calendar 2015 and 3.1 percent growth in calendar 2016,” Glenn said, according to a Seeking Alpha transcript of the March 18 earnings conference call. U.S. industrial production should grow 3.8 percent year-over-year in 2015 and 3.6 percent in 2016, fueling an increase in freight volumes. With the U.S. and other developed countries gaining economic traction after years of slower growth, the rest of the world should eventually pick up its pace, he said. FedEx expects global real GDP growth of 2.8 percent in 2015 and 3.1 percent next year, Glenn said. Operating profit soared 129 percent at air division FedEx Express to $384 million despite a $10 million decline in revenue to $6.66 billion. The division’s U.S. business was strong, with overnight package volume rising 5 percent and deferred packages up 4 percent. On the international side, currency exchanges rates hurt exports but helped imports as the value of the U.S. dollar increased. International economy volumes were up 4 percent, while priority volumes were flat with the year-ago quarter. International export package volumes picked up only 1 percent. Domestic volumes overseas, however, rose 7 percent. FedEx Ground led the company in revenue growth, increasing sales 12 percent to $3.4 billion, while the ground package division’s operating profit rose 14 percent to $558 million, making FedEx Ground the most profitable division in the $45.6 billion company. Average daily package volume rose 7 percent at FedEx Ground, thanks to growth in business-to-business and home delivery services as e-commerce sales increased. Base rate increases and higher dimensional weight charges boosted revenue per package 3 percent, though FedEx officials stressed dim-weight pricing had a minor effect. FedEx SmartPost volumes decreased 7 percent, because of the loss of a major customer for the service, which uses the U.S. Postal Service for final home delivery. However, consumers used SmartPost much further into the peak season than normal, company officials said. That indicates not just increased e-commerce, but the spread online sales over a longer period. FedEx Freight, the largest U.S. less-than-truckload company and the industrial arm of FedEx, increased operating profit 94 percent to $68 million, while revenue rose 6 percent to $1.4 billion. LTL shipment volume increased 3 percent. Revenue per shipment also rose 3 percent, despite lower fuel surcharge revenue, as a result of increased rates. Contact William B. There have been 25 new green corridors launched so far this year, bringing the total to 84 active corridors worldwide, with major developing economies launching the initiatives for the first time, according to a new progress report published Thursday by the Getting to Zero Coalition and the Global Maritime Forum. “The move of major countries like China, India, and Brazil into green corridors is hugely promising, as these are markets that will determine whether zero-emission shipping scales fast enough to meet global climate goals,” Jesse Fahnestock, director of decarbonization at the Global Maritime Forum, said in a statement accompanying the report. At a Crossroads: Annual Progress Report on Green Shipping Corridors 2025 identified the new initiatives that have seen an expansion in both numbers and in geographic scope. “But even more importantly, we’re seeing recognition from these countries that green corridors are more than just environmental projects – they are strategic economic infrastructure,” Fahnestock added. “Countries that move early stand to gain competitive industrial and geopolitical advantages across energy, trade, and technology.” Green shipping corridors are trade routes designed to demonstrate and drive scale in zero-emission fuels, vessels and technologies. Along with China, India and Brazil are Chile, Ghana and Kenya that are targeting economic opportunities through the development of zero-emission marine fuels and bunkering capabilities in these regions. <h3>Stalled by ‘feasibility wall’ </h3>The report, however, cautions that many of the 84 initiatives remain stalled by a "feasibility wall" created by the wide cost gap between conventional and zero-emission fuels. Lack of action at the government level is the main bottleneck facing green corridor projects, a challenge that the delayed IMO net-zero framework has only intensified. The <a href="https://www.joc.com/article/imo-punts-on-pivotal-net-zero-shipping-regulation-6099141">IMO’s net-zero framework was derailed by US-led opposition</a> during a combative October meeting of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) in London and postponed for one year. But the Global Maritime Forum report warns that industry and governments should not surrender the next year to a "wait-and-see" approach as the IMO tries to build support for the framework among member nations. Instead, it says corridors should make use of emerging policies and programs from national governments, such as the EU’s Global Gateway initiative and H2Global and Australia’s Hydrogen Headstart program – something that would unlock progress ahead of a global framework and put participants among the frontrunners to benefit from future IMO incentives. Fahnestock maintained a positive outlook on the regulatory delay, noting that 11 months remain until the IMO regulation once again comes up for renewal at MEPC. “That time can either be spent waiting or used to build projects that create strategic economic advantages, generate learnings that can influence the IMO’s reward mechanism, and put participants first in line for future global rewards,” he said. “Those who act now will be best positioned to benefit when regulation catches up,” he added. Among the recommendations in the annual report were for the shipping industry to “pursue strategies and break inertia” to ensure corridors were advanced enough to qualify for first mover rewards once they become available and to “capitalize on opportunities to shape IMO policy.” The report also advised the shipping industry to better engage with ambitious decarbonization goals that could help scale solutions, particularly with cargo owners who may be more willing to pay a premium for cleaner fuels. <h3>Carbon emissions stage recovery </h3>One of the largest of the green corridor projects connects the hubs of Rotterdam and Singapore, and even though forced diversions around southern Africa created longer voyages, carbon emissions in container shipping was showing signs of recovery. The Xeneta and Marine Benchmark Carbon Emissions Index (CEI), which measures carbon emissions across Xeneta’s top 13 global container shipping trades, fell below 100 points for the first time in 12 months to stand at 97.4 points in the second quarter. The <a href="https://www.joc.com/article/singapore-rotterdam-ports-commit-to-green-corridor-deal-5242711">Rotterdam-Singapore Green and Digital Shipping Corridor</a> aims to reduce emissions from large container vessels on the 15,000-km route by at least 20% by 2030 by enabling the use of low- and zero-carbon shipping fuels. It is a project with 25 partners operating more than 90 large container vessels on the route with a combined transport capacity of 1.5 million TEUs per year. The concept of green corridors was established in November 2021 as a critical way to scale new sustainable fuels and technologies. They are regarded as being central to delivering the goal of having zero-emission fuels account for 5% of all fuels by 2030, a target considered to be the threshold at which the infrastructure, supply chains and technologies that support zero-emission fuels are mature enough to enable exponential growth. The DP World-owned subsidiary provides services across Europe, Africa and Asia, and its involvement with the DCSA+ partnership program will enable it to work with container lines, technology providers and terminals to advance standardized data exchange, DCSA said in a statement Tuesday. “Joining DCSA+ allows us to contribute our feeder network expertise to the industry’s collective effort to standardize data exchange and improve interoperability,” Søren Castbak, Unifeeder’s chief commercial officer, said in the statement. The <a href="https://www.joc.com/article/dcsa-turns-to-industry-partners-to-drive-shipping-standards-adoption-6070237">DCSA+ program</a> now has 12 members, including logistics-focused software vendors WNS and Vinturas, the Port of Valencia and Lufthansa Industry Solutions. Unifeeder joins Samskip as part of the DCSA partnership program, but its scale as the biggest feeder operator in Europe far exceeds Samskip. <div class="phx-topic">The winner of an e-fuel-focused tender issued by the Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance (ZEMBA) will be announced before the end of the year despite significant regulatory uncertainty surrounding alternative fuels, the global shippers’ group says. The timing of the announcement was intended to follow the adoption in October of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) net-zero framework of measures intended to close the cost gap between conventional and alternative fuels while accelerating investment in production. But with that adoption derailed by US-led opposition, <a href="https://www.joc.com/article/imo-punts-on-pivotal-net-zero-shipping-regulation-6099141">the IMO was forced to postpone the process for a year</a>, a move that has created challenges for those involved in the tender, said a spokesperson for the Aspen Institute that serves as the secretariat for ZEMBA. “While the current political and economic environments, including the IMO decision to delay, create significant challenges, we are energized to see that the private sector is continuing to lead the way,” the Aspen Institute’s Michellie Hess told the Journal of Commerce. It is <a href="https://www.joc.com/article/global-shipper-group-bullish-on-e-fuel-tender-bids-from-ocean-carriers-5950420">the second tender from ZEMBA</a> that calls for an ocean carrier or group of liners to move the equivalent of 1.5 million TEUs across the Pacific on ships powered by renewable synthetic fuels, with the aim of fast-tracking the commercial deployment of e-fuels at scale to create a competitive market. “We received a number of qualifying e-fuel bids from container carriers,” Hess said. “Despite policy setbacks and significant cost pressures, we are heartened that ZEMBA's freight buyer members are continuing to take a long-term approach and recognize the importance of the clean energy transition of the maritime sector and that it is a smart, forward-looking business strategy.” ZEMBA is a non-profit alliance of more than 40 freight buyers that includes global brands such as IKEA, Electrolux, Nike, Philips and Levi Strauss. <h3>Hapag-Lloyd in bid for second tender </h3>One of the bidders for the second tender is Hapag-Lloyd, which <a href="https://www.joc.com/article/hapag-lloyd-wins-asia-europe-green-shipping-tender-to-launch-next-year-5240949">won the inaugural tender from ZEMBA</a> in April 2024. In that first tender, ZEMBA members collectively committed to purchase alternative fuels associated with 1.2 billion TEU-miles of zero-emission shipping on the Singapore to Rotterdam trade lane in 2025 and 2026. The tender covers a negotiated “green premium” paid by shippers and does not involve the base freight rate. As Hapag-Lloyd nears the halfway mark of the first tender, Arne Maibohm, director of decarbonization at the Hamburg-based carrier, said it was “fully on track and meeting all commitments.” “All volumes that were contractually confirmed are being delivered as agreed,” Maibohm told the Journal of Commerce this week. “We have experienced no challenges in sourcing the required biomethane from the European gas grid...the volumes are fully secured.” As Hapag-Lloyd waits to see whether it will be involved in the second tender, Maibohm noted that the IMO’s postponement of the net-zero framework, “certainly does not make the global decarbonization challenge any easier.” Despite the regulatory setback, he said Hapag-Lloyd remained committed to its climate targets. “Decarbonizing operations is a strategic priority for us and essential to stay competitive and relevant for our customers in the decades ahead,” Maibohm said. “Our long-term direction of achieving net-zero operations by 2045 is therefore not dependent on individual regulatory developments. “Moreover, other frameworks such as <a href="https://www.joc.com/article/high-price-to-pay-for-non-compliance-with-fueleu-rules-lloyds-register-5918498">FuelEU Maritime</a> are already in force and will continue to drive the uptake of alternative fuels,” he added. With the IMO delay in adopting global decarbonization measures, improving the fuel efficiency of vessels has attained even greater importance, particularly in Europe. The EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) carbon tax and FuelEU Maritime fuel intensity regulations will come into full effect in 2026, and cutting vessel emissions will directly impact a carrier’s operating costs. It is the second tender from ZEMBA that calls for an ocean carrier or group of liners to move the equivalent of 1.5 million TEUs across the Pacific on ships powered by renewable synthetic fuels, with the aim of fast-tracking the commercial deployment of e-fuels at scale to create a competitive market. “We received a number of qualifying e-fuel bids from container carriers,” Hess said. “Despite policy setbacks and significant cost pressures, we are heartened that ZEMBA's freight buyer members are continuing to take a long-term approach and recognize the importance of the clean energy transition of the maritime sector and that it is a smart, forward-looking business strategy.” ZEMBA is a non-profit alliance of more than 40 freight buyers that includes global brands such as IKEA, Electrolux, Nike, Philips and Levi Strauss. Hapag-Lloyd in bid for second tender One of the bidders for the second tender is Hapag-Lloyd, which won the inaugural tender from ZEMBA in April 2024. In that first tender, ZEMBA members collectively committed to purchase alternative fuels associated with 1.2 billion TEU-miles of zero-emission shipping on the Singapore to Rotterdam trade lane in 2025 and 2026. The tender covers a negotiated “green premium” paid by shippers and does not involve the base freight rate. As Hapag-Lloyd nears the halfway mark of the first tender, Arne Maibohm, director of decarbonization at the Hamburg-based carrier, said it was “fully on track and meeting all commitments.” “All volumes that were contractually confirmed are being delivered as agreed,” Maibohm told the Journal of Commerce this week. “We have experienced no challenges in sourcing the required biomethane from the European gas grid...the volumes are fully secured.” As Hapag-Lloyd waits to see whether it will be involved in the second tender, Maibohm noted that the IMO’s postponement of the net-zero framework, “certainly does not make the global decarbonization challenge any easier.” Despite the regulatory setback, he said Hapag-Lloyd remained committed to its climate targets. “Decarbonizing operations is a strategic priority for us and essential to stay competitive and relevant for our customers in the decades ahead,” Maibohm said. “Our long-term direction of achieving net-zero operations by 2045 is therefore not dependent on individual regulatory developments. “Moreover, other frameworks such as FuelEU Maritime are already in force and will continue to drive the uptake of alternative fuels,” he added. With the IMO delay in adopting global decarbonization measures, improving the fuel efficiency of vessels has attained even greater importance, particularly in Europe. The EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) carbon tax and FuelEU Maritime fuel intensity regulations will come into full effect in 2026, and cutting vessel emissions will directly impact a carrier’s operating costs. <div class="phx-topic">A shift in the supply-demand balance in container shipping dragged down the financial results of ocean carriers in the third quarter, and maritime experts see nothing in market conditions to change their view that the industry’s multi-year profitability voyage will end in 2026. Global fleet capacity is forecast to grow 6.9% to 32.97 million TEUs this year and by another 2.2% in 2026 to 33.7 million TEUs, according to Drewry Shipping Consultants, and Bimco expects global container volume growth of between 2.5% and 3.5% in both years. While carriers will remain in the black this year thanks in large part to a strong first half that is already in the bank, full-year operating profit will be near $20 billion for 2025 compared with more than $60 billion last year, Drewry noted. But the maritime consultant is predicting industry losses will top $10 billion in 2026. The sharp drop in revenue and profits in the third quarter was dramatic across the board. Revenue among the 11 carriers that report their turnover showed a third-quarter drop of $44 billion, down 22% compared with the revenue earned in the third quarter of last year, Sea-Intelligence Maritime Analysis noted in its latest Sunday Spotlight Newsletter. Despite volume gains across most of the carriers, the combined earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) in the third quarter fell sharply year over year — from $17.06 billion to $5.12 billion. However, Sea-Intelligence emphasized that although the 2024 peak has passed, the EBIT floor has not yet fallen to pre-COVID 2019 levels. Morgan said in its outlook. Spot rates from Asia to the US West Coast, as measured by various indexes, are down 30% to 60% year over year, depending on the index and trade lane. The world of LTL is slow to embrace change. Business anachronisms permeate current supply chain processes. These vestiges of the way things used to work define the LTL freight transportation procurement process of many modern shippers.David Knuth, logistics specialist at IEWC, a global supplier of cable and wire based in Wisconsin, is happy to have modernized the RFP process, automating the entire LTL bidding procedure with Bid$ense, SMC³’s automated truckload and LTL freight transportation sourcing solution. But when prompted, he can still recall what once was.In his previous job, a large part of his duties were consumed by creating an intermodal bid package for carriers. In a spreadsheet, Knuth detailed the company’s volumes lane by lane, taking care to delete any errant keystrokes or misleading data. He would then email out the information to each carrier, taking time to respond to detailed technical questions about the spreadsheet data. Finally, he had to compile all the results, create an algorithm that would compare the carriers on each lane, and award the business.“It was a huge undertaking. It took about four months to do,” Knuth said of the old process. “It was almost a full-time job for that part of the year, every year.”In his new job at IEWC, he sat down with Bid$ense on day one and was amazed at the capabilities. Over the past three decades, we have built a legacy of reliability, innovation, and commitment to Mexico’s growth. Our journey has been defined by continuous evolution and a steadfast dedication to our mission. SSA Marine México currently operates in six of the country’s most important ports: Cozumel, Lazaro Cardenas, Manzanillo, Progreso, Tuxpan, and Veracruz. Additionally, we have signed a concession to operate a new multipurpose terminal in Guaymas, Sonora, expanding our footprint to the north of the country. We serve a wide range of segments including containers, general cargo, automobiles, cruise ships, hydrocarbons, and asphalt. As part of this ongoing commitment, SSA Marine Mexico continues to strengthen its infrastructure and capabilities. International trade remains a key driver of global economic growth, and we are proud to support this momentum. Through our continuous improvement strategy, we invest in cutting-edge technology and equipment to deliver more efficient and competitive services, contributing to the success of Mexican businesses. •	Manzanillo, Colima- Specialized Container Terminal I: On October 13, we celebrated the arrival of two new STS (Ship To Shore) Super Post Panamax dockside cranes. This $21.2 million USD investment significantly boosts our operational capacity, streamlining cargo reception and delivery processes. In line with our modernization efforts, we will also retire four of our oldest cranes, paving the way for a more sustainable and technologically advanced fleet that meets the evolving demands of international trade. With these upgrades, SSA Marine México now operates a total of 16 cranes along our 1,350-meter dock, reaffirming our position as a national benchmark in port <span class="joc_admin__inline-image joc_admin__inline-image-aspect-ratio-4_3 joc_admin__inline-image-position-left joc_admin__inline-image-size-large" data-figure-size="large" data-figure-position="left" data-figure-aspect-ratio="4:3"><img src="/content-assets/1760982635607_Manzanillo.jpg" alt="Image provided by SSA Marine" class="joc_admin__inline-image-inherit"> •	As for the Multipurpose Terminal and Specialized Facility, also in Manzanillo, Colima, improvement and conditioning works are planned, along with the acquisition of four E-RTG (Electric Rubber-Tyred Gantry) cranes to enhance operational efficiency and sustainability. •	At our Automobile and General Cargo Terminal in the port of Veracruz, we continue to lead with specialized value-added services that support our clients’ growth. Recent investments include a new washing cabin and a general cargo warehouse, increasing indoor storage capacity by 67%. •	Lazaro Cardenas, Michoacan – Specialized Automobile Terminal: we are working on the development of an additional 4-hectare storage space within our bonded area and a 10-hectare Vehicle Distribution Center (VDC).
