Air cargo trucker Towne Air Freight acquired HBI Freight, one of the largest full-service air cargo and home delivery trucking companies on the eastern seaboard. Towne will integrate HBI into its nationwide airport to airport service, strengthening its air and ocean freight carrier position.
HBI brings nearly 200 employees and widespread pick up and delivery service into the coast-to-coast trucking network. Newly added facilities in Harrisburg, Pa., Norfolk, Va. and Richmond, Va., will bolster both linehaul and local cartage coverage throughout the mid-Atlantic states. Towne will now own facilities in the major airport markets of Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and Raleigh-Durham, N.C., which were previously served by an agent.
By The Numbers: North America Air Freight.
“We’ve been seeking the right opportunity to increase our market share and develop a more robust operation on the East Coast” said Tom Downey, Towne’s President and CEO. “The acquisition of HBI affords us the ability to intensify our commitment to that region with an established core of seasoned associates who are knowledgeable in both air freight and home delivery. We’re looking forward to great improvements in our points list, linehaul services and local pickup and delivery areas.”
“We’re excited to join a growth-minded company such as Towne Air Freight,” said Ed Hogan, owner of HBI Freight. “The shared values and dedication to customer service make Towne and HBI a perfect match. It makes sense to merge operations with an end goal of providing our customer bases more services in more areas.”
Following an initial transition period, HBI will operate under the Towne Air Freight name as early as mid-December.
