Northwest swings to profit

Northwest Airlines on Thursday said it reversed a loss of a year ago to post a quarterly profit on peak summer leisure travel.

Northwest, the fourth-largest U.S. air carrier, reported a net profit of $42 million, compared with a net loss of $46 million a year earlier.

Total operating revenue slipped 0.3 percent to nearly $2.56 billion in the quarter from a year earlier. A decrease in passenger revenue was offset partly by an improvement in cargo revenue, Northwest said.
