Cargo strong for top China airline

Taiwan's largest carrier China Airlines said on Friday its pre-tax profit was expected to hit $4 billion New Taiwan Dollars (US$120 million) in 2004 from an earlier projection of US$120 million on strong cargo demand and a recovering economy.

Published reports quoted company president Philip Wei as saying that the airline would raise its pre-tax profit forecast from TWD$3.2 billion to TWD$4 billion later this year.

In 2003, China Airlines made a net profit of US$54.1 million, after Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome kept business and leisure travelers closer to home.

The carrier has said it expects to hit record sales of US$2.68 billion in 2004, up 17.3 percent from US$2.28 million last year.
