Lufthansa Cargo Workers Strike Against Flight Ban

Lufthansa Cargo employees walked off the job at Frankfurt airport Tuesday to protest a temporary ban on night flights at the carrier’s global hub.

About 500 employees took part in the 90-minute stoppage called by the airline’s staff council, which claims the ban puts thousands of jobs at risk.

A local court in the state of Hesse recently imposed a ban on flights between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. from October 30, pending the outcome of a final ruling by a higher federal court in the new year. The ban forced Lufthansa Cargo to revamp 80 percent of its schedules at short notice, including the cancellation of three weekly freighter flights to China.

Lufthansa Cargo was slated to operate ten of the 17 night time landings and take offs at Frankfurt airport. Lufthansa Cargo employs 2,400 people, including 400 pilots, at Frankfurt.
