On Oct. 6, 2009, the Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University will host the 60th anniversary of the Harry E. Salzberg Memorial Program, an annual celebration of achievements in supply chain management. The recipient of this year's Salzberg Medallion Concept Award is the late Malcom McLean, a legendary American entrepreneur who is often referred to as the father of containerization for developing the standardized shipping container, which replaced the traditional break bulk method of handling dry goods and revolutionized the transport of goods and cargo worldwide. McLean later founded Sea-Land Service, Inc., one of the pioneers in the global intermodal freight transportation sector. The Salzberg Medallion Concept Award will be accepted on behalf of the McLean family by one of McLean's children.

The 60th anniversary Salzberg Memorial program begins at 1 p.m. in the Lender Auditorium, located on the concourse level of the Whitman School building. In addition to the presentation of the Salzberg Medallion, the program will include a panel discussions on Global Railroading and Transportation Infrastructure. The recipient of the Salzberg Medallion Outstanding Practitioner Award is Michael C. Ward, chairman and CEO of CSX.

The container has had a profound impact on international trade over the past six decades, and the Whitman School of Management and Syracuse University are deeply honored to pay tribute to its chief inventor, Malcom McLean, for his lifelong contribution to our global supply chain network, says Frances

Gaither Tucker, associate professor of marketing and supply chain management and chair of the marketing department in the Whitman School. Recognizing Mr. McLean with the concept award and Michael Ward from CSX with the outstanding practitioner award is a remarkably appropriate way to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Salzberg Memorial Program.

The event is free and open to the public. Paid parking is available at the University Avenue Garage.
