UPS Applauds Renewed Focus On U.S. Exports, Job Creation

WASHINGTON, D.C., Feb. 4, 2010 – The new National Export Initiative (NEI), announced here by U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke, today was lauded by UPS’s top executive as “a forceful step on the path to strengthening our economy and creating jobs.”

“UPS knows that there is unlimited potential in international markets for American businesses,” said Scott Davis, UPS’s chairman and CEO. “Manufacturers large and small all across this country can increase the volume and value of the goods they ship abroad.”

Often the biggest challenge, particularly for smaller and mid-sized companies, is finding an effective way to connect with potential customers outside the United States, Davis continued. That is one reason why UPS is particularly pleased to see the NEI’s focus on the role that smaller companies can play in meeting the challenge of doubling exports in five years.

“UPS has been working with the Commerce Department’s U.S. Commercial Service since 2007 to provide export assistance to smaller firms,” said Davis. “Our experience shows us that once these firms pursue international expansion, they grow and they create jobs. We look forward to working with the President’s team in any way we can on this new, important endeavor.”
